Ruth Stone was born on June 8th in 1915 in Virginia, she died at the age of 96 in 2011. She lived in a rural farmhouse in Vermont for much of her life and raised three daughters alone after her husband, professor Walter Stone, committed suicide in 1959.
She wrote thirteen books of poetry and received many awards and honours, including the 2002 National Book Award for Poetry. Her first book of poetry In an Iridescent Time, was published in 1959 it was shortly afterwardsd her husband killed himself, the shock and grief would impact her poetry for the rest of her life She didn’t publish anything further until 1971 Topography, however her life was always dedicated to poetry and teaching.
Ruth is perhaps a poet not as well known as she should be, this may because her writing is direct and honest not in a concealed style as is the current trend, I love her form and expression in the poem below 1941:
