The Battle of Waterloo was fought on this day, 18 June 1815, near Waterloo in Belgium, part of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands at the time. A French army under the command of Napoleon Bonaparte was defeated by two of the armies of the Seventh Coalition controlled by The Duke of Wellington.

In 1813 at Leipzig, after more than a decade of dominating the European continent, the French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte had been defeated and was later exiled to the island of Elba. This arrangement did not last long, Napoleon escaped, starting what was known as the Hundred Days where he assumed control of France once more. Waterloo was the decisive engagement of the Waterloo Campaign and Napoleon’s last. The defeat at Waterloo ended Napoleon’s rule as Emperor of the French and marked the end of his Hundred Days return from exile.
‘Waterloo’ was also featured in ABBA’s 1974 Eurovision winning song:
Not sure Napoleon or Wellington would appreciate this as much as I do. 😉
